Residence permit

A residence permit is an authorization or document connected with residence in a country. Its duration and conditions depend on the jurisdiction and permit type.

Meaning of residence permit

The Cyprus Migration Department describes a residence permit as a card associated with a separate residence right. The right for the holder and adult dependents has unlimited validity, while the card has an expiry date and must be replaced when it expires.[2]

The term also appears in descriptions of permission to reside for a defined purpose. Latvia's migration authority discusses temporary permits for qualifying share capital investors, while Greece's ministry lists documents for initial and renewal applications for an investor permanent residence permit.[3][4]

Malta's programme grants permanent residence status and charges a separate residence card fee. In this programme, a residence card and residence status are related but distinct terms.[1]

Conditions and duration vary

In Cyprus, permit issuance depends on investment criteria, income and other eligibility requirements, and family members may be covered or may apply separately. For underage dependents, the residence permit is valid until age 18.[2]

An approved applicant living outside Cyprus must establish residence there within one year for the permit to remain valid. Holders provide annual evidence of the investment and of health insurance when they no longer benefit from GESY. In Cyprus, criminal record certificates are submitted every three years.[2]

Malta charges a residence card fee covering five years and requires a valid travel document and health insurance. Malta's property requirement separates the initial qualifying period from the later obligation to maintain a residential property in Malta.[1]

A permit's name alone does not indicate its duration or all its conditions. These depend on the jurisdiction, permit category and family circumstances.[2]

Key points

The Greek ministry provides separate application materials for initial investor permanent residence permits and renewals. Greek investor permanent residence applications include a fee for printing a separate electronic residence permit and, for renewal, copies of travel document pages covering the prior permit's period of validity.[3]
